Wharariki Trust is proud to have been a part of the collaboration between Te Whatu Ora—Child Healthy Homes programme, Health NZ, Genesis Energy, and ECCT in establishing a curtain bank for the Wairoa community.
The Child Healthy Housing supported the purchase of an industrial overlocker and sewing machine, and general sewing items like scissors and rulers. Health New Zealand provided an ideal space at Wairoa Hospital, where the curtain bank is now based, at no cost and furthermore, donated shelving. ECCT and Genesis Energy contributed towards operational costs.
Wharariki Trust oversaw the coordination and establishment of the project, while also managing the funds that were required.
Opening mid 2024, An amazing group of volunteers have been running Ahi Mahana and, to date, over 50 sets of curtains have been provided to 40 homes. The families are grateful for the warmth that theses curtains provide and feel their children have had better health over winter as a result.
